Being Out is Not Always Safe
I’m Jay Yoder, and I’m out as heck: I’m out as a dyke-y kinky queer. I’m out as a genderqueer AFAB. I’m out as a Complex Trauma, rape, molestation, stalking, abuse and religious trama survivor. I’m out as a mental health advocate. I’m out as a critique-er of toxic cis-hetero-normative monogomy. I’m out as someone who has lost custody of a child because of lack of legal protections for queer alternative relationship structured families.
And being out is the right choice for me.
Working in the field of sexualized violence advocacy and prevention, it would create ethical mazes if we asked the survivors we support to keep secrets about us and our identities, as we’ve seen happen in a recent case.
But for our clients at Into Account, both among our Christian clients, and among a current set of clients from kink communities, going all-out isn’t always an option.
If you’re curious about closeting and outing, Into Account has a couple of resources for that. Peruse them below, and let us know if you have questions.
